Advanced Lower Face Botulinum Toxin Treatment

What is it?

Advanced toxin injections contain a protein that is extracted from the bacterium botulinum toxin type A (commonly known as ‘Botox’) which is injected into the muscle. These injections are expertly positioned and help to relax muscles to contour the face and neck.

Results Achieved

Injecting toxin into the lower face isn’t about immobilising all muscles because we have to be able to speak, smile and communicate via our facial expression. It is about targeting the muscles that contribute to wrinkles and a droopy appearance of the lower face, resulting in:

  • Smoother contoured face and neck
  • De-programming of overactive muscles

The results on the lower face are often very subtle – for maximum results, committing to fresh skin treatments and homecare products will enhance the appearance of the skin.

Common Queries Regarding This Procedure

How does it work?

It temporarily reduces muscle function by blocking the action of the nerve to the muscle.

  • Eyebrow shape – Targeting the muscle in the eyebrow area often results in the outer edge of the eyebrow lifting.
  • Bunny Lines – Some people habitually crunch their nose like a bunny does, hence the name. Targeting these muscles enables no to little movement and prevention of nose wrinkles.
  • Vertical Lip Lines – Smokers, in particular, are prone to lines from the constant contraction of the lips during smoking. It isn't only smokers who develop these lines; many non-smokers are troubled with this. Placing small doses around the skin on the lip reduces the ability to tighten muscles but still allows you movement so that you can speak and smile.
  • Gummy Smile – People who show a lot of gum when they smile usually have a strong muscle that lifts the lip much higher than normal. By targeting the elevator muscles in the lip, we can weaken this muscle resulting in a more relaxed smile.
  • Smile Lift – when we age the corners of the mouth turn down which often makes us look sad. If a muscle is contributing to this down turn, placing a small amount of toxin can de-activate the muscle responsible for pulling, and a subtle lift can be noticed.
  • Jowl Lift – There are depressor muscles that pull down and elevator muscles that lift up. They work in tandem with each other, and when we work on contouring the jowl, we are targeting the depressor muscles so that the elevator muscles take over – creating a subtle lift.
  • Nefertiti lift- neck bands & Jowls
  • Due to the ageing process the platysmal bands, which are thin sheets of muscle, located down either side of the neck shorten and pull on the jaw line. This can lead to loose sagging skin in the neck region and the appearance of jowls around the jawline. Multiple injections of Botulinum toxin can be placed along theses bands to lengthen and tighten the muscles in the neck and re-define the jawline. Resulting in a smoother tighter more lifted youthful appearance in the Neck and Jaw region.

For whom is it not suitable?

It is suitable for most people who want to prevent and treat wrinkles. It is the best prevention treatment for wrinkles, and even older people with static lines love the relaxed look it provides. It is produced in albumen so is not suitable if you are vegan or have an allergy to eggs. It also isn't suitable if you have any neuro-muscular conditions or have ever suffered from Bells Palsy.

Can it be combined with other treatments?

Skin health treatments - are usually indicated when treating the lower face, because as good as it is at preventing and reducing wrinkles, it works on the muscle and not the skin. In order to improve the skin health, the skin cells need to be stimulated – we can do that with prescription homecare, peels, lasers and medical facials; see fresh skin to find out more. Dermal filler – is also commonly used in combination with toxin treatment to sculpt, shape and add volume. Generally other cosmetic treatments should not be carried out within two weeks of anti-wrinkle injections.

Is it safe?

When the treatment is carried out in a HIS registered clinic by a medically qualified, experienced injector, it is completely safe. It uses a therapeutic dose of botulinum toxin, which is prescribed for your needs. In studies, it is deemed one of the safest non-surgical treatments availab.e

Are there any risks or side effects?
  • It is possible you may have an awareness of it taking effect, especially in the lip area because it's such a sensitive area.
  • Some people report having a headache afterwards - more often it is related to tension and anxiety prior to having the treatment.
  • Bruising - there is always a risk of bruising with any injection, but they are usually quite small and usually cover easily with makeup.
Is it sore?

This is such a commonly asked question, and most clients tell us it's never as bad as they thought it would be. It is a tiny, super thin needle, which increases comfort. Each injection lasts around 1 - 2 seconds and is over with very quickly. We do have anaesthetic cream for patients who are very nervous but apart from around the eye and lip area it doesn't alter the feeling because the anaesthetic doesn't reach the depth of the muscle.

What is the recovery time?

Immediately after injections, tiny red bumps can appear, and are practically resolved within 10-15 minutes. This is a popular lunchtime treatment.

How long do the results last?

On average 2 - 6 months. The smaller the dose of toxin the quicker the muscle will return to normal. Unfortunately, in the lower part of the face, we have to use small doses so that you still look natural. Our bodies are programmed to have the nerve/muscle function restored and the time this takes is variable, due to individual differences and the dosages used.

It is unlikely the muscle will be 'frozen' for 3 - 6 months as the function of the muscle gradually returns. Treatments are usually repeated at a 3 - 4 month interval.
