Skin Tightening on the Face – Is it even possible?

Skin tightening sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Well, the good news is, it is possible and the results that can be achieved depend on many different factors which we will explain in this post.  (RF) Radiofrequency skin tightening works in two ways, firstly by tightening the collagen and elastin fibres in the skin and secondly, by stimulating the cells to produce better collagen and elastin fibres.

(RF) Radiofrequency Skin Tightening – the science part!

Skin tightening is carried out using (RF) radio-frequency energies and is suitable for all skin types. As the skin ages on the face, it loses firmness, and sagging skin becomes more noticeable, particularly on the lower part of the face. The skin begins to droop around the lower part of mouth, jaw, chin and neck area. This treatment targets the collagen and elastin fibres and bulk heat them to create a tightening of the fibres in the skin, thus lifting and sculpting the face.

The contraction of the skin in the dermis, caused by the heating, gives an instant visible lift, and it has been widely reported to be a popular treatment for celebrities in their preparation for donning the red carpet.

As well as the contraction of the collagen and elastin fibres, it stimulates the production of new fibres by targeting the fibroblasts (cells that produce collagen and elastin). Stimulation of these cells is the best anti-ageing benefit you can provide for your skin.

These fibroblast cells begin to get sluggish from the age of 28, or sometimes even younger. So from that time our skin health is in decline.

So what are the results of RF skin tightening?

Fine wrinkles are reduced, noticeable lifting can be observed on the skin and the texture of your skin becomes smoother, more luminous and toned.

Sublime Skin Tightening using Syneron-Candela laser is a proven FDA cleared treatment for Skin Tightening via Wrinkle Treatment. This means that it has been proven to reduce wrinkles on the skin by firming the skin.

The results do vary, and differences in the results depend on the type of skin tightening device used, the age of the skin, the techniques used and how well you look after your skin during and after treatments.

Age 30-44

Clients who are at the early stages of fine lines, and who are beginning to lose the taut feeling on their skin, are likely to see a difference. They are also likely to feel their skin firmer with a reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The real benefit to this age group is in seeing the changes in the skin, resulting from the stimulated fibroblasts producing more collagen and elastin fibres, thus hitting a pause button on the ageing process.

Age 44-55

Clients are closer to menopausal changes in the skin, and ageing can be accelerated here. Skin can vary greatly, depending on genetics, sun damage and smoking. This is where ageing is noticed the most and is probably now beyond fine lines and wrinkles. These clients benefit greatly from boosting the collagen and elastin in their skin and the results achieved will depend on the quality of their skin. It is possible to see a lift, but for certain, they will be boosting the collagen and elastin in their skin making it firmer and rejuvenated. Again the stimulation of the fibroblasts, feeding the skin with better quality collagen and elastin fibres will be able to hit a pause button on the ageing process.

Age 56 and greater

Clients will have passed the menopause phase and again the cells producing collagen and elastin are even more sluggish. Genetics, sun damage and smoking, hugely influence how the skin looks. Often people who have managed to avoid the ravaging effects of the sun and smoking, are likely now to see a change in their skin. There are some 65-year-olds who have more youthful skin than a 55year old and that is related to genetics, smoking, sun and stress. Clients with older, thin and crepe skin are probably not going to see a visible lift but will see improvements in the firmness of the skin which will feel more supple and youthful as well as an improvement in the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Summary of what it achieves

Improves the skin at a cellular level so that it is built with better quality collagen and elastin fibres. These higher quality fibres provide a stronger matrix within the skin creating a lifted, more youthful appearance. It also boosts the texture and suppleness of the skin whilst reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Summary of what it does not achieve

It is not an alternative to surgery and it will not dramatically lift droopy skin, although it will have a firming effect on the area treated. Some people look in the mirror and hold up their skin with their fingers (we all do that to imagine what we would look like, don’t we?) and again it will not provide that level of lifting.

It is only possible to have tighter rejuvenated skin by having treatments carried out in courses of 3-5 treatments, and older skin types benefit from monthly treatments on an ongoing basis.
